Why don't we have 1930 plates in stock?

The answer is simply that Oregon never issued 1930 passenger plates. A common misconception about why there aren't plates is that the state chose not to issue plates because of the stock market crash of 1929. This actually isn't the case, as several 1930 license plate types (dealer, motorcycle, and seasonal farm) were issued. So what's the truth? The real reason Oregon does not have 1930 plates for cars and trucks is that in 1930, the legislature voted to issue plates by the fiscal year, rather than the calendar year. So, to accomplish the switch's timing, the state issued 6-month temporary decals at the beginning of 1930 that were valid until June 30, 1930. These decals went in your front windshield and you kept your 1929 plates on the car. Motorists were then issued 1931 plates starting in July of 1930, marked with 'Expires June 30, 1931'. This experiment lasted only three years and in 1933 the state issued a second plate (in place of another decal) that was valid from July 1st to December 31st, 1933 to switch back to the calendar year.

So what do you do now?

Today, because there are no 1930 plates, the Oregon DMV allows you to run 1929 or 1931 plates on 1930 vehicles. There is no issue registering these plates this way and the DMV does it all the time with no issue. We have a great selection of pairs and singles to choose from, and you can even order a 1930 decal with the plates to put on your car.
